United Airlines is confirming its order for 110 more jetliners from Boeing and Airbus, ensuring a steady supply of new aircraft into the next decade. The decision comes amidst robust demand and supply chain issues that are making new delivery slots increasingly unavailable.

“We don’t usually place orders for planes this far out,” said United’s Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Nocella. “However, due to production lines frequently experiencing disruptions from supply chain issues and delivery delays, they’re already sold out for the entire decade.” The new fleet is expected to begin deliveries in 2028.

The order includes an additional 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, supplementing the firm order of 100 twin-aisle planes announced last December. The airline will also have options for another 50 planes. This move aligns with United’s aggressive expansion of its international services to maximize the revival of overseas travel, a market that the new long-range Dreamliners are designed to serve.

On top of this, the Chicago-based carrier is purchasing 60 Airbus A321neos, adding to an existing order of 120 from the European manufacturer. This includes 50 extra-long-range versions and an option for an additional 40 Airbus A321s.

United and several other airlines have turned to operating larger aircraft packed with more seats as a solution to infrastructure constraints. This strategy, known as upgauging, will see an average of more than 145 seats per North American departure by 2027, representing a 40% increase since 2019.

This significant expansion of orders comes at a time when airlines are competing for new and more fuel-efficient aircraft to meet the surge in post-Covid travel. However, delays in deliveries have led to a shortage of planes while upgrades targeting affluent travelers who are willing to pay extra for premium seats have also fallen behind schedule.

In addition to expanding its fleet, United announced on Tuesday a revamp of its bedding and amenities kits for its Polaris business class. The new additions include luxury items such as eye serums and a face spray, enhancing the overall travel experience for its passengers.
