Renowned film maker Martin Scorsese recently attended the London Film Festival screening of his latest work, “Killers of the Flower Moon”. In conversation with Sky News, he openly discussed the challenges of filmmaking at his age. Now 80, Scorsese admits that the process is “very hard work”, and one that requires a burning desire to express something.

In recent times, Scorsese has sparked concerns among movie buffs with hints about his retirement. In some interviews, he’s suggested only a few more ventures onto the big screen – perhaps even just one more film. He emphasized to Sky News that commitment to filmmaking needs to be wholehearted, depending on whether there’s something compelling you want to convey.

His latest project is a serious Western drama based on true events. The film revisits a chain of murders in Oklahoma during the 1920s and 1930s, which were largely ignored in their time. The victims were indigenous Native Americans who fell prey to a ruthless land acquisition for oil beneath their homes. Scorsese has teamed up once again with Leonardo DiCaprio for this endeavor.

However, not everything went smoothly for Scorsese’s new release. He expressed disappointment that none of his cast could accompany him on the red carpet due to the US actors’ strikes. The Screen Actors Guild Union members are currently standing up against studios over concerns about AI usage in cinema.

The film industry in general faces tough challenges today. Cinemas continue to struggle to regain their audiences who haven’t returned in pre-COVID numbers yet. Despite these difficulties, Scorsese remains hopeful about the future of cinema. He believes that with new technology and younger audiences viewing it differently, there’s potential for cinema to transform into a new form, leaving it up to the younger generation.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is set for release on October 20th.
